Roe V. Wade Overturned: Statement from Mothering Justice Executive Director Danielle Atkinson
DETROIT — In response to the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization striking down the constitutional right to abortion protected under Roe v. Wade, Mothering Justice Executive Director Danielle Atkinson released the following statement:
“The U.S. Supreme Court’s abhorrent decision is an assault on the health, freedom and essential human rights and dignity of all people — especially women and birthing people of color. We know that the United States has a long history of enacting oppressive and discriminatory laws and policies that disparately harm our families and communities.
“There is no greater violation of human rights or barrier to equity and justice than when a government acts to take away our power to control our own bodies, decision making and destinies.
"As mamas of color, for centuries we have fought for the right to protect our bodies. As an organization, we believe reproductive justice is something every woman deserves. In 2022, we should not be required to answer to anyone about how we make health decisions or what we choose to do with our bodies or lives.
“Mothering Justice will continue to use our Mama's Agenda to fight for reproductive justice until the laws respects our right to bodily autonomy and our agency to determine what's best for our health, families and futures.”
