This morning the Michigan Safety Net Coalition met with Senator Stabenow’s staff. Regional Director Terry Campbell and Policy Director Jacqueline Snyder spoke with Mothering Justice, MOSES and MI United about protecting SNAP in regards to the latest version of the Farm Bill. This group presented stories from it’s members and supporters whose lives have been made better because of Safety Net assistance. We know that the unemployment rate in Michigan has decreased substantially and with that the use of benefits has gone down. The latest “work requirement” presented by Republicans therefore isn’t based in reality and doesn’t serve a true purpose. People want to work and the latest data proves that. No one strives to live in an endless cycle of poverty. We’re optimistic that both parties are working on a more bipartisan package that’ll ensure people are always put over profit. Terry Campbell said it best, “when you do the right thing, it’s cheaper for everyone”. And what’s right is ensuring economic equity for all.
